Practice report: Young players emerging
The Missouri Tigers went through one last workout in shoulder pads and shorts before strapping full pads on for Friday's practice. PowerMizzou.com has the rundown on Thursday's events:
*Michael Egnew made a nice grab during drills. Egnew is wearing #82 and William Moore hollered, "Nice catch, T-Ruck."
*Tommy Saunders and Carl Gettis were staging some nice battles during one-on-ones. Gettis won the first one, batting a ball down, but Saunders came back and beat him with a great move. Gettis clutched at Saunders and nearly pulled his shorts down, but Tommy still made the catch.
*My early award for this year's Gettis (in other words, the freshman you're not thinking about who might see the field) goes to Jerrell Jackson. To my eye, he's been the best young wideout in camp so far. He made a great move to get past Munir Prince and haul in a long pass. Jackson, who did not have a single offer from anyone but Missouri, talked to me about the recruiting process a little bit after practice and I'll have more on him some time over the weekend.
*Play of the Day: During a defensive drill, players are supposed to tag the ball carrier and let him go. Apparently, Sean Weatherspoon wasn't doing it well enough for Dave Steckel. After one play, Steckel screamed "That's three times. Tag his ass!" On the very next snap, Weatherspoon absolutely blew up Andrew Jones on his way to the ball carrier. Message received.
"Coach Steck, he's riding me hard. He has to be like that. I told him to be like that," Spoon said. "I went out there and took it out on little Andrew. I didn't mean to do him like that, but it's all good. Just making him better."
*Player of the day: Ziggy Hood has appeared almost unblock able. He spent half his day in the offensive backfield it seemed. The Tigers are going to need him to be great, and the senior is off to a strong start.
The Tigers return to the practice field Friday morning at 7:15 in full pads.
