November 9, 2009 Cornerback Anthony Davis returned from football exile on Saturday and saw his first significant playing time since the season opener against Northern Colorado. After freshman D.J. Beshears struggled against Kansas State in the first half, Mangino inserted Davis into the game."He actually played pretty well," Mangino said of Davis. "Grading the tape I don't think he had any missed assignments and we are kind of easing him back into things and that is a positive because he is a talented guy and we have to get his confidence back and feeling good about making plays." Davis played much better than he did against Northern Colorado. That game he committed several pass interference penalties and was replaced by Chris Harris the following week. Mangino noticed that Davis' confidence was noticeably higher against Kansas State. "He is the type of guy that has to ease into things," Mangino said. "He is not a guy who can rush into things, that is not his personality or his style. He has to get comfortable and I think the last two weeks on the practice field, working with him and he is getting more and more confident at that position." Texas time KU will play at Texas at either 2:30 or 7 p.m. on Nov. 21 before facing Missouri at Arrowhead Stadium on Nov. 28 at 2:30 p.m. A time for the KU-Texas game is expected before the end of this week. By the end of the year Kansas will have appeared on ABC five times as KU's games against Oklahoma and Texas Tech were on the network. Don't call it a benching Someone asked Mangino if benching Todd Reesing against Texas Tech hurt the quarterback's confidence heading into the Kansas State game. "Using the term benching is quite strong and I have my reasons as to why I pulled him out of the game," Mangino said. "A lot of it had to do with protecting his health. He threw the ball quite well at times against Kansas State and did some really positive things. It is not a matter of his confidence as he can handle all that." "His problems are just fundamental things. It is not major breakdowns, it is just protecting the ball and seeing a read or two a little sooner and not throwing it into traffic." |
