Kansas coach Charlie Weis this week talked with the media during the weekly Big 12 Coaches Teleconference. Here is what he had to say.

Weis on the competitiveness of the Big 12 …

I am new to the Big 12 so I am just in the grind of going through this schedule. I just know that anyone outside this conference doesn't understand the talent in this league. They are missing the boat because there is tons and tons of talent. Every week you are dealing with another set of problems. It doesn't make any difference on who you are playing, it is a new set of problems.

Weis on Landry Jones performance last week …

I think Landry was at the top of his game against us. He's had a couple of flat games but when he's on he is on. Unfortunately we got him on one of those nights. If you want to go back to the Kansas State game, that was a game where he wasn't on. He's got good players around him but when he's in a groove he's one of the best.

Weis on Jones' best attribute …

His accuracy. He can complete all the passes and he is big and strong, experienced and he's done all those things. I think when you are an accurate passer that is big, strong, and experienced that's a very dangerous combination.

Weis on what he likes about his football team right now …

What I like about our football team right now is we can run the football on offense. Defensively our coaching staff and our players have done a good job of just fighting to the end each week. We are coming off a 52-7 trouncing from Oklahoma so there isn't a lot to like about that game. This is the only game where we went into halftime and the game was basically over.

The timing of this [question] so my answer isn't so hot. I do like the fact that they fought to the end of every game. In the Oklahoma game it's 14-7 in the second half. The first play of the half being a kickoff return for a touchdown. As far as the quarterback situation I will announce what I am doing tomorrow.

Weis on if better quarterback play would've won the team more games this year …

Yeah better quarterback play but the quarterback is just one position. If we had better play from the quarterback, scored more points on offense, and make more plays on defense. I think to just hang the quarterback out to dry that's not really the direction I would take that. I look at those games in ways that coaches can make a difference. Yes, there are two to four games that we could've gotten wins but that's a group effort and not a position effort.

Weis on his players playing hard …

I like the fact that the players play hard and appreciate that they play hard. Moral victories isn't what you are in it for. Okay, we got whopped up by Oklahoma pretty good and with Okie State the week before we are down 20-14 and we have the ball in plus territory at the end of the game. A chance to beat a high quality team. The next hurdle that our program has to get over is we have to beat somebody. In the Big 12 every week it's another tough team. Now you have Texas rolling into town with one of the best coaches in America. One of my favorite coaches as well with a load team coming off a nice rebound after a disheartening loss to Oklahoma. The next thing for our program - competing that's great - but sooner or later you got to beat somebody and that's the next step you got to make.

Weis on Texas' defense ..

You have to look at who they are giving up a bunch of points and yards to. This league has a lot of offensive firepower. Three of those teams we are talking about. Giving up those points to Oklahoma, Baylor, West Virginia, those teams score a lot of points every week. I think Texas has a lot of good football players who are capable of playing very good defense.

I think sometimes you go up against some of these offenses and they spread you out and make plays all over the field. It's a nightmare for defensive coordinators and defenses.

Mack Brown

Brown on Charlie Weis and KU's progress this year ...

Charlie to me is one of the great coaches in the country. In what he did with Bill Belichick in New England is incredible with three Super Bowls. What he did with Tom Brady. I thought he did a great job at Notre Dame and then to do what he did with the Kansas City Chiefs, just turning that offense around immediately.

To hire Dave Campo which to me was a brilliant choice. He's been a head coach and a coordinator in college at some of the best programs. To be a great defensive coach in the NFL, I think they are well on their way and they are a much better football team than the one we played last year. Just watching the team last night and this morning, he has them headed in the right direction. They are running the ball well, and the young back who was suspended earlier in the year was back and they are physical. He is well on his way.
