January 22, 2013Jayhawk Slant talked with former Kansas defensive end Toben Opurum. He is preparing for the KU Pro Day in March where he will work out in front of NFL scouts and coaches.
Opurum on his daily offseason routine
Since I am on break and don't have to worry about classes, my day pretty much consists of making breakfast which is the most important meal of the day. I make the drive to Kansas to train with Mark Simoneau of Simoneau Sports Performance. He is a former K-State player and NFL player. He is really well known and he does a good job with his players. I work out with Bradley McDougald and Josh Williams so they are out there too.
After my workout I grab something to eat and drive back to Lawrence and sit in the hot tub and get my legs underneath me. Then I just relax.
Opurum on talking with former KU players about preparing for the NFL
I used to live with Chris Harris so I get a chance to talk with him once every now and then. He tells me to stay focused and do whatever it takes and sacrifice. It's a big challenge you have to be up for.
Opurum on what is he working to improve
The biggest thing for me is hip flexibility and getting my speed back up. I want to be able to show them that I can move my hips and play in space. Do whatever teams ask of me.
Opurum on the team's outlook for spring ball
I am excited to see some of the guys on the defensive line grow. I want to see if the work that me and Josh Williams left behind continues and I expect it to. Coach Weis will push those guys really hard and give them a chance to compete next year.
Opurum on which player will surprise people at the KU spring game
I don't know if Jake Heaps counts because the expectations will be high for him. I would say Ben Goodman or JaCorey Shepherd. It will be different watching on the sidelines but I am always excited to see the younger guys beneath us develop and get better.
