Weis on win over Louisiana Tech
A couple of turnovers late gave us a chance. They fumbled out of the end zone and then they fumbled down close to the goal line. They had a chance to put us down two scores and in deep trouble. We bounced back and tight it. After we got some help on that last fumble we practiced the same play we do every day and Wyman nails a 52 yard field goal.
On going with Wyman at the end:
To be honest with you this year from that distance he has been 80% and practice. That is 80% with a hard rush on you. I am a play the odds guy and we don't practice Trevor very much a field goals. I just felt that 52 yards was within his range.
The funny part about it is we do practice that situation going all the way back to last year when everyone laughed at us. And it finally presented itself.
On the offense:
We were grasping some because they were handling us in the interior defensive line. We really couldn't get inside runs going. Then we started to get a couple outside runs going and they started to expand to the outside. That forced us to go to a mix and match, and grabbing from here and there. Rod Coleman came up big with a catch or two and next thing you know we flip field position to give ourselves a chance.
On the third down completion to Christian Matthews:
Those of the balls we have not been coming up with. Today that wasn't the case. There were some guys in traffic that made some big plays I can only remember one drop on the day and that was the one that hit Tony in the chest. We did a much better job catching the ball this week.
On Jimmay Mundine:
It was good for Jimmay and his confidence. I was happy to see that for him and all of this. I was certainly happy for him.
I will answer a few questions but if you will indulge me we haven't won a game like that since I have been here. We have a bunch of players that you the ass to interview, and after a win like that I would rather you talk to them.
They have big guys inside and they play very physical. Our offense was sputtering an inconsistent. Or why we didn't hand the ball to James more inside because they were handling is inside. Pardula did a great job of controlling the field position. He flipped the field multiple times for us and that was big. Obviously our specialists came up huge in this game.
Our defense held them and we got very fortunate when their quarterback fumbled the ball out of the end zone. I didn't think there was any doubt that was the correct call and that was a big play for us. They would have gone up two scores and we would have been in some serious trouble.
But we came back and tied it up and then got another turnover inside the 10. We were fortunate to get down there into a situation where we practice every day. When I first got here and we first started practicing that last spring everyone laughed at us. They were saying look a what they are practicing. There it was. That is what the locker room felt like.
I give credit to Louisiana Tech. We can talk about the records and coaching transitions it doesn't make any difference to me. I'm the delighted for our kids for our students, and I'm delighted for our fans. We obviously have a lot of work to do and we are an imperfect team. We have a lot of holes. We have a lot of things to fix.
After a win today let those guys enjoy themselves for a change. Usually when they come in here it is to talk about why we lost and not why we won.
On the final drive:
If we get at least one first down, which we did on the first play, I saw that they went to an odd front rushing three guys. So I came back on the second down and ran the same play and got like 6 yards. Now there is a minute to go and I called time out because I am totally going to change the mentality. I was going to run the clock out.
It just worked out that way. After you got the first down and then some yardage now I felt that the field was a little bit more open and we could spread them out. We could get it down there into serviceable field goal range.
I know that we ran at 30 times and threw it 40-something times. But I have to try to win not only this game, but preparing our team to improve. As I have said to all of you regular reporters that have been here all the time, we're never going to have a chance to compete in the Big 12 if all we're going to do is run the ball. I would have run the ball a lot more today if Louisiana Tech wasn't handling our inside zone.
But winning a game like that might be the best thing that has happened to our team. I am counting on us looking back to this game that this is a game we turned the corner.
It was far from a perfect game. There are a lot of things you sit there and say oh my God. You are grasping trying to find an answer when they take away our bread and butter. For me when they take away your inside running game you are taking away the heart and soul of what we do. It puts you on the edge in the passing game which is a little bit uncomfortable for me. Right now I am happy for all of us but most happy for those kids down there.
