Hawk Talk Recap
Hawk Talk conducted its weekly radio show on Monday with head coach Charlie Weis and host Bob Davis. Here are some of the highlights.
Weis on who he is going to play on Saturday at quarterback
As I have said all along we evaluate on a week to week basis. Every week Cozart is playing more. I am not in the business of sitting here and telling our opponent what we are going to do just because the fans want to know what you are going to do. Why would you do that and tell West Virginia that we are playing so and so and they can just be ready for him. It doesn't make any sense to do that. It's not like we don't know what we are going to do. We have been game planning Sunday and Monday. We are just not in the business of telling teams who you are going against because they are two different types of quarterbacks. West Virginia will gear one part of their practice geared towards stopping the option, then another part of their practice stopping what Jake will bring. Then they will have a part where they compare what we did last year when we played them and what elements from that game will be redundant and what they will see again. Those three things will take a majority of their practice time.
Weis on Montell Cozart's composure
He has very good composure. The toughest thing for the quarterback is getting the play calls. I think once he gets to the line of scrimmage he is very calm and not flustered. I think those are the things his teammates look for because it makes the players more confident when he is more confident.
Weis on game time for Iowa State game being either 11 am or 7 pm
It doesn't get any worse than a night game. Sign me up for an 11 am game over a 7 pm game any day of the week. I just can't imagine having to wait around to 7 pm on the road. It doesn't get worse than that.
Weis on how the game time affects planning
We have different schedules for what to do on a Saturday depending on when the kickoff time is. Friday is affected by it too. Everything through Thursday is the same it's just how you tweak Friday and Saturday.
Weis on the most improved parts of the team
While we gave up a kickoff touchdown on Saturday, the special teams unit overall has been a big improvement from last year to this year. I think that Trevor Pardula has had a lot to do with that. He should be a strong contender for being the best and he has helped field position time and time again. You can talk about the overall defense like this week it was the run defense but probably our secondary has been our best area. We had some penalties in the last game but this year it has been a drastic improvement compared to last year.
Weis on the durability of James Sims
In the two years I have had him he has been all day tough every time we have played. It doesn't matter whether he gets 20 carries for 5 catches in the game. You never have to worry about whether he is going to show up or not. He has a really aggressive mentality. When you tackle him you are paying the price. He is hitting you with physicality.
Weis on Riley Spencer
The fact that he played every play, it's been a long time since Riley has played a lot of football. I was just happy for him and happy for us that he was able to hang in there for the whole game.
Weis on the new dead period rules in recruiting
The dead period is so coaches don't call players and bother them over the holidays. From mid December to mid January you can't see any of the players. Before that that means there was a week in early January before the convention where you could go out recruiting. Now you don't have that week. If you aren't playing for a bowl game and we just got eliminated from a bowl game, so that's a week that you could be grinding while other teams aren't able to and gain an advantage. This year that turns into a bit of a disadvantage because we could have used the week on the road. At the same time it allows the players to have a Christmas vacation without the coaches there nagging them 24/7.
