Rancho Bernardo vs. Carlsbad at La Costa Canyon HS *
Another home game, another game away from home for Carlsbad because of its field problems. But hopes are higher this week than they have been lately for the Lancers. After opening the year 1-3 thanks to a killer schedule, Carlsbad pulled its first big victory last week against previously undefeated Mission Hills. Rancho Bernardo shouldn't be a big challenge, but the Lancers could make some noise with a blowout -- Winner: Carlsbad Time: October 10 @ 7:00 p.m.

San Pasqual at Oceanside ***
The San Pasqual Eagles have looked decent this year, but that's not the reason to watch. Since its sub-par season-opening win, Oceanside has gotten better every week. Quarterback Jordan Wynn is controlling games, and the Pirates' receivers, defense and linemen are more than holding their own. This could be Oceanside's 17th straight win, a number that might look small by the end of the season -- Winner: Oceanside Time: October 10 @ 7:00 p.m.

El Capitan at Valhalla ****
Don't expect to see many running plays here. Three-star quarterback Tanner Rust leads El Capitan, and rising junior Pete Thomas leads Valhalla. El Capitan is 3-2 and has looked decent, while the Norseman are undefeated (4-0). Neither team has really been tested, though, so this one is tough to read. The edge could go to Valhalla, simply because Thomas is on a roll. He completed 26 of 32 passes for 333 yards in a shutout win last week -- Winner: Valhalla Time: October 10 @ 7:00 p.m.

Francis Parker at Laguna Beach **
Though this is a cross-section game, Francis shouldn't be too worried. Laguna Beach won't offer much of a challenge. But after the Lancers won by 69 points last week, it'll be fun to see how many points they put up. Francis isn't deep enough to challenge the bigger San Diego schools, but another huge win could put it on the edge of the top-10. A small school state title berth isn't out of the question, either -- Winner: Francis Parker Time: October 10 @ 7:00 p.m.

Valley Center at Westview *****
This is what league-openers are all about. Neither team has been tested the past few weeks, and both are undefeated. Yes, this is their first Valley League game, but it could determine who finishes second in the league. Oceanside likely has the top-spot locked down, so the Jaguars and Wolverines will be battling for the runner-up spot. Don't count out Ramona, though -- Winner: Valley Center Time: October 10 @ 7:30 p.m.
