JEFFERSON - When cornerback Deion Bonner mentions Georgia his eyes get wide and a huge smile seems to cover his entire face.
One of the state's top prospects for 2012, the rising junior from perennial state power Carver definitely has the Bulldogs on his mind.
"Georgia is still my No. 1," the 6-foot, 185-pounder said. "They're my favorite because of the coaching staff and I get along great with the players there. The defense fits me as a corner."
No doubt the Bulldog coaching staff would love the youngster to eventually matriculate to Athens.
Bonner is one of those tall, athletic cornerbacks that secondary coach Scott Lakatos craves, and no doubt will be one of Georgia's top targets next year.
But other schools will also be in pursuit.
Clemson, Florida State and South Carolina have also offered scholarships, with Auburn and Alabama, along with a host of others, believed to be on the verge of doing so as well.
"I've been a Georgia fan all my life," Bonner said. "But even as I've gone through the recruiting process, and get more and more details about the other schools, Georgia still comes out No. 1."
Of course, Bonner isn't the only Carver player high on the wish lists of schools.
Teammates Gabe Wright and Isaiah Crowell are coveted by virtually every big-time program in the country. Bonner and Crowell are particularly close and they talk about the recruiting process often.
"Isaiah's pretty cool. Him and I work on together on the recruiting stuff," Bonner said. "We go to schools together and we talk about what we like, what we don't like, stuff like that."
What are Crowell's thoughts on Georgia?
"He likes Georgia, too," Bonner said.
But like Crowell, don't look for Bonner to make any rash decision.
Last week, Crowell told UGASports that he planned on waiting until Signing Day next February to make his choice known. Apparently, Bonner is going to follow the same path and said he'll wait until Signing Day 2012 to make his choice known.
