VIDEO: Thomas, Country Day Blank Harper Woods

BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. - Behind a dominant running game, Beverly Hills (Mich.) Detroit Country Day put seven touchdowns on the board, and their defense prevented any response from Harper Woods as the Yellow Jackets cruised to a 49-0 victory.

Thomas Breakdown
Though he prefers defense, junior lineman Poet Thomas looked like a better fit to me on offense. He isn't a polished product at either position, but showed good ability to drive-block defenders from the offensive tackle position. On defense, it might be hard for him to get good leverage out of his 6-6 frame.

On both sides of the ball, it was clear to me that this is a kid just growing into his body. Like he acknowledged in the interview, he needs to get into the weight room and transform from a "big kid" into a strong young man. That will help him dominate on both sides of the ball like you'd expect someone his size to do. On a similar note, you can tell his movement skills were a little awkward. Again, that's part of the growth process for a kid who is bigger than everyone else his age. As he gets used to carrying around the weight on the field, that will improve.

It is important to note that he was being double- and even triple-teamed on nearly every defensive snap. Harper Woods clearly game-planned to avoid him as much as possible. Despite the extra attention, he was managing to hold his ground, and even getting some good penetration at times. Turning that penetration into production will be the next step in his growth as a player.
