QB a good fit for Iowa

Quarterback Nic Shimonek has been starting at Mildred for Coach Patrick Harvell since his freshman year of high school. On Thursday, the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Shimonek quickly accepted a scholarship offer from the Iowa coaching staff and will play his college ball for the Hawkeyes. We caught up with Harvell to talk about his star QB, what kind of player Iowa is getting, and much more.

Q: Can you talk a little bit about Iowa's recruitment of Nic? Did it all come together pretty fast it sounds like?

HARVELL: Yeah, it did. We've been doing football and Iowa came down a couple weeks ago and watched Nic throw, saw his game film, and seemed to be very impressed with him. Then it all kind of snowballed from there. Like you said, it went pretty quickly.

Q: What can you tell us about Nic and the type of player that Iowa is getting in him?

HARVELL: Well, first of all, they're just getting an awesome kid. I mean this is a kid of great character, integrity, and I can't say enough about him as a person. He's the kind of young man that you want your own son to grow up and be like. As far as a football player, he's got a very strong arm. He's a pocket passer with a very strong arm and he's accurate with the ball. He takes care of the ball and understands the ball is the most important thing in the game. That's pretty evident by the fact that he had 37 touchdown passes and only three interceptions. He takes care of the ball during the game. To me, the best thing about him is he's a great leader. He's been our starting quarterback here at Mildred High School since he was a freshman and we've been building up to the type of year we had this year. We were 13-2 and a state semifinalist in Class 2A and a lot of that was due to Nic's progression as a quarterback from his freshman year to his junior year.

As a junior, Shimonek completed 193 of 291 pass attempts (66.3%) for 2,939 yards and 37 touchdowns with only three interceptions. After leading Mildred to a 13-2 record, he was named offensive player of the year and first team all-district. Shimonek is also an all-district performer in basketball and baseball as well.

Shimonek's commitment on Thursday gives the Hawkeyes eight verbal pledges in the Class of 2013.
