Davis visits Shimonek

Iowa offensive coordinator Greg Davis was back in his home state of Texas this past weekend to visit Hawkeye quarterback commit Nic Shimonek. With Davis in attendance, the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Shimonek led Mildred High School to a 44-14 playoff win over Clarksville on Friday, throwing for two touchdowns and running for three more. We caught up with the quarterback to talk about his performance, the visit from Davis, and much more.

Q: Can you talk about the visit from Coach Davis on Friday?

SHIMONEK: It went well. It's always good for him to come watch me in person because you can really get a grasp for some different traits that you can't see on film like leadership and things like that. In that sense, it was good for him to come see me and see how I operate not only on the field, but on the sideline as well.

Q: How did the game go on Friday? It sounded like you guys picked up a big win.

SHIMONEK: Yeah. We played a really good team (Clarksville), a really athletic team. I think they have three kids going D1. But the main thing that we had success with is one of our cornerbacks had three interceptions. We have a tendency to make our opponents look bad I guess you could say, but they're actually a really good team. We've just been really good at capitalizing on other team's mistakes all year and we're playing really well right now.

Through 12 games this season, Shimonek is 137/213 passing (64.3%) for 2,167 yards and 30 touchdowns with only 5 interceptions. Mildred High School is currently 11-1 on the year and plays Nocona in the state quarterfinals on Friday, December 7.
