Slade impressed with time in Spartan Country

Defensive end Darius Slade of Montclair High School in New Jersey is one of the top recruits on the board for Michigan State. He was in East Lansing this weekend for his official visit. SpartanMag.com was able to speak with about his trip.

Michigan State Defensive Coordinator Pat Narduzzi knows what he likes when it comes to defensive ends and Slade is a player that he and position coach Ron Burton think can be special. Slade traveled to Michigan State this weekend with his family and we asked him about his thoughts on the trip.

"I had to much fun there really and the biggest thing out of all the things that stood out to me was the family atmosphere," Slade said. "Every school says were like a family here but you really have to see it. It was unbelievable."

The Spartans have been very active recruiting Slade, but this was the first time that they have had him on campus and really been able to sit down and speak with him candidly about football, education and family. We ask Slade about his interaction with the staff.

"I have to mention how great of a coach, Coach Dantonio is," Slade said. "I mean he really is a straight forward guy and a respectful person. Coach Narduzzi is also a great coach but he is also a mastermind. He knows football. Coach Burton; I grew a big and better relationship with him over the weekend. Great guy. Lots of passion and energy. Pushes his players and knows the game so the coaches are great. I just had to confirm their attendance for the next 5-years there."

One aspect that has been a positive for Michigan State is the staff stability. Coach Dantonio is one of the longest tenured coaches in the Big Ten and is going nowhere. I have been told from reliable sources that the Spartans intend to make sure Coach Narduzzi stays in East Lansing for the long haul.

Slade was hosted this weekend by Spartan defensive end Shilique Calhoun who is also from New Jersey. Calhoun is one of the top young defensive ends in the nation and his development at Michigan State has been impressive. The staff hope Slade can come in and follow Calhoun in the same way that Calhoun followed William Gholston.

Slade does not have time-table for his decision. He still wants to compare some schools and the Spartans understand that. Coach Dantonio has never been a high pressure recruiter. he wants players who want to bleed Green and White and come to that decision on their own accord.

Other teams involved in Slade's recruitment include Rutgers, West Virgina, Kansas, Syracuse and Nebraska. The Cornhuskers are the most recent team to offer.

This coming weekend he will lead his undefeated Montclair team into a showdown with Bayonne High School. SpartanMag.com will continue to follow Slade's recruitment in the coming weeks.
