Football Notebook: Rucker's ready to fight

The biggest topic of the day came in the way of some off-the-field news.

Mack Brown announced that Texas running backs coach Ken Rucker has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and the Longhorn assistant will undergo surgery on August 27.

Rucker actually indicated to Brown that he'd be willing to postpone the surgery until after the season - "I told him that was ridiculous," Brown said - but he'll instead play it safe and get the procedure out of the way. He'll continue to practice with the team as scheduled until the Monday of the surgery, and he'll return as soon as he's feeling up to it.

"I should get it out as soon as I can, and I want to be strong by the end of the season. We expect a great year and I want to be there at the end to experience it," Rucker said.

Brown said that Rucker is expected to have a full recovery, and the third-year Longhorn assistant seemed extremely confident and comfortable that he'd win this newest battle.
