Notebook: Campo talks to the media

Kansas defensive coordinator Dave Campo talked to the media on Tuesday. Once again Campo didn't want to answer questions about individual players, but did say felt "halfway decent" about the secondary.

Although don't be surprised if we see several offensive players get some occasional snaps in the secondary this fall.

"If you watched New England play, they will use a back-up receiver as a nickel back if you don't have one that is going to be in a full-time situation," Campo said. "It is going to be a total team. We are going to try and get the best 11 guys on offense and the best 11 guys on defense, whoever those guys are."

Campo on Crist

Last week the Kansas offense got the best of a scrimmage against the defense. Weis previously said that Dayne Crist was one of the standout players during that practice. On Tuesday, Campo reiterated Weis' comments about Crist taking the reigns as the starting quarterback, but also pointed out that he felt that the defense won the 7-on-7 before the scrimmage.

"I think there's been a little bit of give and take, but I think Dayne is playing very well and that's good for all of us, defense, offense and special teams," Campo said.

Campo talks about McDonald

Kansas announced a new transfer this week in Notre Dame linebacker Anthony McDonald. He played in 28 games for the Irish during his four seasons in South Bend.

After sitting out the 2008 season as a true freshman, McDonald appeared in all 12 of Notre Dame's games during the 2009 season playing under then Irish head coach and current Kansas head coach Charlie Weis. McDonald, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound linebacker, collected 10 tackles in 2009 while playing primarily on special teams.

"He is a guy, who if you just lined him up would play that position (middle linebacker) although I think he is a little bit interchangeable as well. I think his profile fits that position more so than an outside backer or weak-side/inside backer."

Reynolds athleticism

One of the few current players that Campo did mention was sophomore linebacker Michael Reynolds. While Reynolds is still very raw, he has impressed the coaches with his athleticism.

"Michael Reynolds is the type of athlete that we need to get on the football field in some way, shape or form if he is the right guy. That is what we are working on right now because he certainly is athletic and he can run. I think in this league you need some guys who can play in space and he is capable of doing that."
