Opposing view: KU vs TCU
To get a closer look at this week's game from the TCU side we caught up with Travis Brown, the publisher of Purple Menace.com
What type of offense does TCU run and who are the play-makers?
TCU runs a multiple set offense that bases primarily out of the spread. They'll use a lot of five wide or ace back formations out of the shotgun. They will go under center for a double tight set. The biggest offensive threat is the Pachall to Josh Boyce tandem, but all of TCU receivers are very talented. Skye Dawson has great speed, but will be playing his first game after serving a suspension from the Grambling game. At running back, TCU will use two backs, Matthew Tucker and Waymon James.
Talk about what makes Casey Pachall an effective quarterback
He simply has incredible athletic ability. The connection he has with Josh Boyce is also a big help. They claim to know what each other is thinking on the field.
What type of defense does TCU play and what are their strengths?
TCU runs Coach Gary Patterson's patented 4-2-5 defense that depends on speedy defensive backs. It is the only formation TCU runs onto the field. But they use different coverage and blitz schemes, so it's like there are multiple sets. Stansley Moponga at defensive end is the best player on defense who will most likely draw a few double teams throughout the game. That opens up the other side for freshman DE Devonte Fields to shine. He is a four-star true freshman who had a great first game against Grambling.
What did you learn from the opener against Grambling State?
Not much that will impact Saturday's game. We got a good look at the second string players as most were in by the second quarter.
Has there been any interesting news happen lately?
Senior defensive end Ross Forrest is most likely out for the season, but had already been replaced on the depth chart by Fields. It will be interesting to see how Skye Dawson is implemented after sitting out last week. We know he will be returning kicks and punts instead of freshman Deante' Gray, who broke the school's single-game punt return yard record. This will be Patterson's first game as the winningest coach in school history. Patterson is from Kansas, walked on at KSU and said he grew up a KU fan.
How do you see this match-up and what is your prediction?
It should be fairly lopsided. Patterson said Rice's offense is fairly similar to TCU's so they got a good look at Kansas' defense. TCU easily has much better athletes and coaches than Rice so anything less than a blowout would be disappointing to TCU fans. I'll say 35-10 Frogs.
