Located in Pullman, Wash., with an enrollment of 19,255, Washington State is 2-1 on the season after its 58-56 overtime loss at Pepperdine on Friday. The Cougars are coached by Ken Bone who is 59-47 in his fourth season at WSU and 394-219 in his 13 season overall. WSU averages 72.0 points per game and has a +13.3 scoring margin. The Cougars crash the boards with a +10.0 rebound margin (37.0-27.0).
Senior forward Brock Motum leads Washington State in scoring with 17.7 points per contest to go along with 6.7 rebounds per game. Senior guard Mike Ladd is the Cougars' second-leading rebounder at 7.0 per outing and has four steals through three games. He is second on the team with a 12.7 scoring average. Former Kansas Jayhawk Royce Woolridge (7.7 ppg) and sophomore forward D.J. Shelton (5.3 ppg) round out the Washington State starters. Woolridge, a sophomore guard at WSU who played in 16 games for Kansas during the 2010-11 season and scored nine points, is tied for the WSU lead with 10 assists and four steals, while Shelton leads the Cougars with 7.3 rebounds per game.
Other WSU regulars include sophomore guard Dexter Kernich-Drew (8.7 ppg), sophomore guard Will DiIorio (3.3 ppg, 2.7 rpg) and freshman forward Richard Longrus (2.0 ppg, 2.7 rpg).
Kansas vs. Washington State: The Series
Kansas holds a 1-0 series advantage against Washington State. KU defeated WSU 66-51 in the opening round of the Jayhawk Classic on Dec. 14, 1973, in Allen Fieldhouse. KU's Norm Cook led all scorers with 16 points, while Danny Knight scored 16 and Dale Greenlee 10 for the Jayhawks. KU went on to win the 1973 Jayhawk Classic defeating Oregon, 67-49, the following day. Under head coach Ted Owens, KU went 23-7 in 1973-74, won the Big Eight regular-season title with a 13-1 record and advanced to the Final Four in Greensboro, N.C.
