Beaty talks about support from Zenger, administration

Tuesday is the day the media meets with Kansas head coach David Beaty. But this week everything started earlier because the media was allowed to tour the new locker room and player’s lounge.

When Beaty started his press conference he asked everybody what they thought about the new locker room after the tour. After that he talked about how proud they are to show it to visitors and have the players use it as their home.

Beaty went to Kansas athletics director Dr. Sheahon Zenger after his first season and said they needed to upgrade the Anderson Family Complex. The building was brand new in 2008 but Beaty felt it needed some bells and whistles.

Well, maybe it was a little bigger than that. He wanted a new locker room, player’s lounge, and meeting room. This wasn’t just knocking down a few walls and painting a room.

Zenger and his staff told Beaty it would get done. Fast forward to September and all three phases are complete so they can be used for the 2016 season.

“That’s not normal it doesn’t happen like that around the country,” Beaty said about the fast upgrades. “He (Zenger) gets it and it’s not just him, it is his staff. Sean Lester (Deputy AD) does more things than any human I’ve ever met in my life here. He just gets it done. Brad Nachtigal (AD/Capital Projects) is another one who leads up a project that we had about 50 days to do. For that place to be turned into what it got turned into in 50 days is amazing.”

On the athletics side there has been a lot of construction completed over the last four to five years at Kansas. Beaty is thankful the administration listened and completed a project he believed had to be done.

“I want to say a huge thank you to our athletic director Dr. Zenger,” Beaty said. “That guy has been phenomenal. Not just for me but for all of us and our athletic department. I mean basketball, women’s basketball, softball, track, tennis, baseball I mean you name it every department that we have here. He gets it. He works tirelessly to get us what we need.

“Everything that I have asked him he has done it. Whatever you need coach we will get it taken care of. This is a first class place and my hat goes off to him because he is the one who made that happen. That dude is really good.”

Beaty and his staff have been showing off the locker room to recruits since the first of week of September. Several recruits have been impressed with the upgrades and Beaty believes it will help in building the program.

“That is going to help us moving forward,” Beaty said. “That is how we’re going to work on improving around here. It is about developing and recruiting. Obviously we are still developing.”
