Big 12 Teleconference Recap

Kansas coach Charlie Weis talked with the media during the Big 12 Coaches Teleconference.
Weis on giving away tickets to the students …

I think it was a good experience because there was a lot more people eat the game then would've been if I didn't do that. Lets face it, you are a student going to college you don't have a ticket but it's a beautiful night out. You want to go to the game but you don't have the money for it. We had a lot of seats left and I figured the only way was if somebody stepped to the plate and said I'll take care of it. What could possibly be wrong in doing that.
There were a lot of people there. It was nice and loud early and the game was competitive into the second quarter. The game started to get away from us but it didn't get away from us because of the fan base. The fans were there and loud and into the game.
Weis on not having to play this week after a tough loss …
It was really tough with everything we put into that last game and as disappointing as it was if we were playing this week we would've found a way. Fortunately we are not playing this week so that gives us this week to get that out of the way. We are going to use this week as a half and half week. We are going to spend half the time on West Virginia and half the time getting better ourselves. Going offense against defense and pounding it a little bit. I think fundamentally and technically we need that work. I think psychologically this week would've been a bit of a struggle. We would've found a way to get it done but fortunately I don't have to deal with that. We can work them hard for a few days and then let them spend some time with their families over Thanksgiving then get back to a true game week on Monday.
Weis on the surprise of seeing Iowa State play Sam Richardson …
He wasn't even listed on the two deep he was listed as the third quarterback. The kid had just played in one game and hadn't done too much all year long. All of a sudden he comes in and lights up. You have to give the kid credit. He had a heck of a game. Usually you prepare for the guys who are listed at one or two on the depth chart. He wasn't in that mix.
Weis on Iowa State's offense…
Actually they did more base stuff than they had been running. You were ready for all the criss-cross and the exotics they have been running the last couple of weeks. You spend a week practicing all those and you have to give them credit because they went way more base than they have been doing. They simplified things for him and he executed well. What they did was easier than what we practiced against but we didn't spend a lot of time or a big portion working on their base because there are so many exotics you had to get ready for.
Weis on West Virginia's Tavon Austin …
He is a pain in the butt as you know. He already has over a 100 catches on the year. They put him back there and he runs for over 300 yards against arguably one of the better defenses especially against the run that you could go against. The fact that he also returns punts and kicks, I don't think the number one is going to be my favorite number the day we play.
Weis on if we was surprised at Baylor upsetting Kansas State …
It didn't come as a big surprise to me that Baylor played well against them because Baylor can score against anybody. That's what they did in that game. What surprised me a little more was how solid they played on defense against Kansas State. I know when we played them their defense played a very good game against us. Really they have been hanging their hat on offense and any week they can score points. It didn't surprise me and wouldn't surprise if they were competing to win this week's game either.
