Charles Cole starts his official visits with KU this weekend

Charles Cole figures to get a lot of attention from the Kansas staff this weekend. Right now he is the only known scheduled official visitor expected to be on campus.

The defensive lineman from Butler County has seen his stock rise over the last month and things aren’t slowing down.

This will be the second time Cole has been on KU’s campus this season after he participated in the Jayhawks summer camp. That’s where Kansas defensive coordinator Clint Bowen first saw Cole.

“I went to the camp there this summer it was a juco camp that they had,” Cole said. “I got a call from the defensive coordinator after he watched my film. We had a good talk with each other. Then he offered me a scholarship. Since then I have been keeping in contact with him talked about getting me up there for a visit.”

Cole put together a good season and attracted attention late from college recruiters. At 6-foot-3, 280 pounds he can play different positions along the defensive line.

Originally he is from Ypsilanti, Mich., and took the same path his brother did. His brother Arlington Hambright started on the Garden City team that won a national championship team two years ago. He signed with Oklahoma State.

“My brother went to Garden City and played at Oklahoma State after that,” Cole said. “I decided to go the junior college route and went to Butler. I had a good season and I've been blessed to receive scholarship offers.”

Kansas was one his most recent offers and today he picked up an offer from North Texas. The three-star prospect also had a visit Monday from the Kansas State coaches.

“They came down to see me Monday and I had a good talk with them their defensive line coach and linebackers coach,” Cole said about Kansas State.

Cole is a mid-year graduate so he will use December to find his next home. After this weekend his next stops could be Fresno State and UNLV.

Charles Cole game highlights

For a 6-foot-3, 280 pound prospect Cole was versatile for Butler County across the defensive line. He lined anywhere from a five technique off the edge to a nose tackle over the center. Since Kansas used three and four man fronts this season Cole could fit into several different schemes. His burst off the edge is pretty good for a player at 280 pounds.
