Kansas guard Sherron Collins has signed with the Charlotte Bobcats as a free agent, it was confirmed Friday by Collins' agent. The Chicago, Ill., native will participate in summer workouts with the Bobcats under the direction of Charlotte coach and former KU coach Larry Brown.
Collins becomes the third Jayhawk to join an NBA team in 2010 as teammates Cole Aldrich and Xavier Henry were selected in the first round of Thursday night's draft.
"I think last night was probably a disappointing night for (Sherron)," said Kansas head coach Bill Self. "But to wake up this morning and know that Michael Jordan and Larry Brown want him in their camp is something to certainly take the sting off from last night.
"Hopefully he will go in there with the right frame of mind and with an attitude to go earn it," he added. "I am excited for him and I certainly think he will make the most of it."
Collins led KU in scoring each of the last two seasons with 18.9 points per game in 2008-09 and at 15.5 points per game last season. The point guard was a two-time All-Big 12 First Team selection as a junior and senior and the 2010 conference tourney most outstanding player.
Collins received two postseason trophies in 2010 - the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and the inaugural Lute Olson Player of the Year by collegeinsider.com.
A two-time Bob Cousy Award finalist, Collins is Kansas' first Consensus All-America First Team selection since Wayne Simien in 2005. Collins is the winningest player in Kansas basketball history, amassing 130 victories throughout his career. The 130 wins ranks tied for fifth on the NCAA four-year record.
Collins finished his career ranked fifth on the KU career scoring list with 1,888 points. The Big 12 Sixth Man Award winner in 2008, KU's national championship season, Collins also ended his Kansas career ranked fourth in three-point field goals made (232), third three-pointers attempted (615) and seventh in assists (552). He and KU great Darnell Valentine (1978-81) are the only two Jayhawks to record more than 1,800 points and 500 assists for their career.
