Dominic Williams stayed loyal to KU, ready for signing day

Almost 16 months ago Dominic Williams gave the Kansas coaches a verbal commitment. It came during the weekend of David Beaty’s second game as head coach of the Jayhawks.

Fast-forward 500 days later and Williams, a four-star prospect, is set to be one of the headliners of the 2017 class on signing day next Wednesday.

Williams took his official visit to Lawrence with his mother and father last week to get one last look at his future home before he becomes a Jayhawk next week.

“It was great being with the players that are there now and how they took all of us in like we were already part of the family,” Williams said of the visit. “I’m not on the team yet but they just brought me in. It was good to bond with the coaches even more than I have already.”

The trip from Dallas to Lawrence is one the Williams family has down by memory. In the last two seasons they have made several visits to Kansas.

Tony Hull took over as the Jayhawks running backs coach before last year. Williams said he can’t ever spend enough time around the coaching staff.

“That’s who I’m going to be around the next several years and after spending more time with them this weekend, I can see myself even more being around them,” Williams said. “Coach Hull was around me and my family pretty much the whole time. I ate breakfast with coach Beaty and there were times during dinner were he would come around and talk to all of us. A lot of the talk wasn’t about football but other things and just normal conversation.”

The latest addition to Beaty’s staff is offensive coordinator Doug Meacham who joined the Jayhawks after a successful stop at TCU. Williams got to know the offensive coordinator better after the official visit.

“I love Coach Meacham,” Williams said. “He’s a funny guy and isn’t serious all the time. That is a good thing. He knows how to make you laugh. He is a very good coach.”

There isn’t much Williams hasn’t seen of the University. He’s already been around campus, met with academic advisors, and knows the staff. His last visit was in September where he saw the completion of the renovated locker rooms. But it was the first time he saw the new video screens that go above all of the lockers.

“We went into the locker and saw the digital nameplates,” he said. “I have never seen anything like that.”

Williams added he got a lot of good information from his host Julian Chandler and other players.

“They were giving me a lot of advice like managing time and things what to do and what not to do,” Williams said.

Williams ranks 10th on the all-time rushing list in Texas high school history. He recently added more offers to his list from Utah and Baylor. After 500 days of being committed to the Jayhawks he said he is ready for signing day.
