Exclusive: Yenser breaks down each position on the OL

Zach Yenser went into more depth while talking about the offensive line with Jayhawk Slant. Here are some his thoughts at each position.

The left side

A guy that I have been really, really excited about is Tovi at left guard. Jay is doing a good job and obviously he started 12 games last year and he has seen more than Tovi. But I tell Jay everyday don’t get comfortable. I tell him that every day, because someone is right on his heels. Malik has been banged up a little bit and didn’t go through the last scrimmage.

Tovi didn’t report to campus until the summer time. He has used that time better himself in the strength and conditioning department and learn the offense.

“Tovi can’t help but play with the leverage because he is 6-foot-1,” Yenser said. “That doesn’t bother me at all. He is a physical, physical guy and he tries to move people up front. He is smart. When you pick up his notebook it is just paragraphs of notes. He cares and he does a phenomenal job with it and he is still picking it up. I am excited about him and his future.”

It should be no surprise that Hakeem Adeniji is taking all the reps with the first unit and is the projected starter.

The right side

The competition at right tackle is still up in the air and could continue past this week. For now Frazier is still hanging onto a slim lead running with the ones.

"You have Antione and Baldwin still at each other," Yenser said. "Sometimes Antoine will have a good day and then the last scrimmage I think Charles had a really good day. To those guys, the biggest thing is the missed assignments and that’s where they are battling. That’s the biggest thing holding both of them back from naming a starter right now."

Hughes, Chris that is, still holding onto to the top spot at right guard.

"Chris was running with the ones last time we talked and he hasn’t given that up," Yenser said. "Still nipping at his heels you have Larry (Hughes) and (Zach) Hannon there both are guys with experience. What helps Chris so much is he is physical. He is still learning everything else that goes along with it. He is definitely a guy that can move people up front.

"So nothing has changed on the right side. You have Chris and Antoine running out with the ones and Charles and the other guys still battling them."

Center

Yenser said returning starter Mesa Ribordy has run the with the ones all fall camp and the competition is still in full swing for the back-up center role between Jacob Bragg and Hunter Saulsbury.

On road games Yenser wants to have his top eight linemen ready to go and will also get to travel more bodies to have available.

“We will travel 10-12 because of the field goal unit,” he said. “I believe we have eight or nine guys that I feel comfortable with that can get in and play in a game and win a Big 12 game."
