Five-Star Oubre gives the nod to Self, Kansas

For Kelly Oubre, the 6-foot-7, 200-pound shooting guard from Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nev., his recruitment ended much sooner than originally expected. Following a weekend visit to Kansas, the No. 12 ranked player in the 2014 class just committed to Bill Self and the Jayhawks.

The plan had always been quite clear for Kelly Oubre, one of the nations to prospects in the 2014 class. Despite scholarship offers from Connecticut, Florida, Georgetown, Louisville, Oregon, UNLV, Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Baylor, Memphis, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UCLA and others, the native of Texas had seen two schools - Kansas and Kentucky - move to the top of his list.

With two schools firmly at the top of his list, Oubre scheduled official visits to each program. At the time, Kansas would receive a visit during the weekend of Late Night in the Phog, and Kentucky would receive a visit during the weekend of Big Blue Madness.

However, late on Monday night, Oubre indicated that something big was about to happen.

"Big News tomorrow," Oubre tweeted on Monday night.

Jayhawk Slant confirmed with both Oubre and his father, Kelly Oubre, Sr., that a decision would be announced on Tuesday afternoon. Initially, Oubre had planned to go public with his announcement at 3:00 PM (central time), but those plans quickly changed.

Just moments ago, Oubre, on Twitter, made his decision known.

"Blessed to say that I have Committed to Kansas University," said Oubre.

So, what does Oubre's decision mean for Bill Self and the University of Kansas? Well, on Tuesday afternoon, Self and the Jayhawks received a verbal commitment from one of the nations truly elite players in the 2014 class.

Just how good is Kelly Oubre? Well, the sky appears to be the limit for the five-star shooting guard. He's a scoring machine that has the ability to put points on the board in a variety of ways. Early indications are that Oubre will replace Andrew Wiggins on the perimeter next year.

While already considered one of the nation's top prospects, it looks like Oubre could make another jump up in the rankings.

"We wondered how Kelly Oubre would play on Sunday," said Rivals.com National Basketball Recruiting Analyst Eric Bossi. "Not because he isn't good, but because we wondered if the Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep wing would have any legs left after playing on Saturday with next to no sleep. If the 6-foot-7 southpaw was tired, he sure didn't show it as he finished the weekend strong.

"Huge dunks in transition, silky looking jumpers and a nice assortment of off the dribble attacks for scores, Oubre did it all," he added. The five-star wing was arguably the weekend's top performer."
