Hawk Talk Recap

Here are some of the highlights from this week's Hawk Talk with host Bob Davis and Charlie Weis.
Weis on how the team responded to the loss against Texas Tech …

It's good that it hurt because if it didn't hurt then that means it's not that important to them. It's not about how competitive you are it's about winning. At the end of the day all those people say what a great effort but you still lost. If it doesn't hurt then you aren't much of a competitor.
Weis on the effect Tony Pierson's injury had on the team …
It hurt him and it hurt us. Tony's one of our best players. Now that he has that brace off he didn't feel like the one armed bandit and played with some reckless abandon.
Weis on Brandon Bourbon's touchdown …
We had some fun with him because in practice we ran that play and he almost trips and falls down and sure enough during the game he almost trips and falls down. I said we are trying to throw you a touchdown pass. He was uncovered just like he was in practice. He ended up stumbling and bumbling but he got to the pylon. I would score on that play.
Weis on Texas Tech quarterback Seth Doege …
Doege going into that game had thrown more touchdown passes than anyone in the Big 12. Everyone talks about everyone else but he's the one who has thrown the most touchdown passes. Going into the game his touchdown interception ratio was 31 touchdowns and 8 interceptions so you can see that he was productive pretty much all year.
Weis on why Texas Tech quarterbacks don't have much success in the NFL …
Their offense is predicated on the short passing game and getting rid of the ball and getting into space. Going into the NFL those spaces shrink because the players you are going against are a lot better. Some of those bubble screens get blown up and become a lot more dangerous.
Weis on the seniors last game …
I think when you look at this group of guys and what they have been through. There is Mangino, Gill, and Weis. You look at all these changes and during that you haven't had a lot of positives to go with that. This is our last chance to leave a positive taste in their mouth. We have to do everything we can as a coaching staff and non seniors to send them out in a win. We are playing against a tough team. We need as much help as we can get. To get a lot of fans in there would be wonderful.
Weis on what position is hardest to recruit …
You can never get enough big guys and I think they come at a premium. You can find fast guys and skill guys because high school offenses are more geared towards spread so you can find athleticism but you can't find enough big guys. If you can find offensive and defensive linemen who can read and write then you do everything you can to get them.
Weis on what he is focused on …
I think the most important thing is to be worrying about Iowa State. Everyone wants to talk about next year I don't want to talk about next year I want to talk about how to give us the best chance at beating Iowa State. Getting all these losing things behind us so we can move forward.
Weis on the fifth year seniors who transferred to Kansas …
You would be surprised but it's been a win-win for all four of those guys. They've gained a lot of experience from being apart of this community and our team has learned a lot about how to act. They permeate my message that this is what my expectations are on and off the field. They set the bar and everyone else falls in line.
Weis on what Dayne Crist will be doing in ten years …
I guarantee he will be successful in whatever he is doing. Certain people have that special something and he has that. He is a natural leader. He is a wonderful young man and a wonderful person. I will always be there for him because he would always be there for me.
Weis on the three seniors offensive linemens final game …
These guys don't get how emotional they are going to be on Saturday. Until you get to that day and realize that this is the last time you are going to be able to put on this uniform you really just don't understand it. There are a couple of tidbits that are going to happen. For example with Tanner, he will break the record for most consecutive starts in the history of Kansas football. That's consecutive starts. If he is healthy enough to start in the last game against West Virginia he will set the record for the most starts in the history of Kansas football.
That shows you how long he has been around which has been an eternity. Those three guys have been role models for this football team and will be sorely missed.
Weis on Hawkinson starting as a freshman …
I can just imagine when he came in at tight end and then they told him he is starting at offensive line. I'm sure he said, "I don't know too much about it but put me in there." I am sure he went through a lot of growing pains. You want to know how you know a guy is a pretty good player? It's when you don't notice them. If you don't notice an offensive lineman, it means their petty good.
Weis on if he will throw it more next year …
No we are going to keep throwing it nine times a game. Lets look at it from a positive angle. We've had to be more creative every week to be able to find more ways to run the football because those guys know you are going to run it so you can't do the same thing every week. Going into the offseason and we look at development, it's not just the quarterback it's everyone in the passing game. It's the pass protection, the receivers, tight ends, running backs and of course the quarterback.
Personally I would love to be a 50/50 play caller. I would love it if you are running it and throwing it half the time because then they don't really know what you are doing. You have to play to your strengths. Figure out what they are and find a way to do it. That's what we have tried to do this year by evolving the running game. What we've done this year will help next year because we have started to establish some toughness and we are figuring out how to exploit these defenses. Now you put in a much more productive passing game and you have something going.
Weis on Daymond Patterson and D.J. Beshears …
Daymond got that concussion which cost him a bunch of time and hurt him. D.J. hurt his shoulder and to be perfectully honest D.J. might play this week. He will play against West Virginia and there is a chance he will play this week.
