Hawk Talk Recap

Here's the highlights from this week's HawkTalk radio show with head coach Charlie Weis and host Bob Davis.
Weis on limiting turnovers and winning the field position battle …

Since Texas Tech we have focused on not giving up too many turnovers and not giving the opponent the ball in plus territory. We turned it over once unfortunately and give it to them on the 20 yard line. A team like Baylor with that type of firepower they are usually in the endzone in a hurry which they were. Ever since that Texas Tech game we have made sure they are going on a long field.
Weis on JaCorey Shepherd playing both wide receiver and cornerback …
If he could catch he would still be on offense. You can ask JaCorey and I am sure he thinks he is a legend in his own mind but if you think a head coach who is an offensive coordinator is going to move a guy to defense who was catching the ball all over the field? Sign me up for how he is playing on defense. He is pretty solid for us at corner.
Weis on Cozart taking in bad snaps from the center …
He saved us a couple of times because they were high and to the right. It cost us on the run play because we couldn't get a smooth handoff on the play. A couple of those plays he had to keep himself because he did everything he could to make sure he had control of the ball.
Weis on Montell Cozart's future …
The sky is the limit for Montell. He is just two games in. First game he only played 9 snaps. Last game he played over 40 snaps. We think Montell has a very high future.
Weis on how much weight to add to Montell Cozart next year …
As big as Holsopple says he can be without losing his quickness. That's really the bottom line. Different guys have different body frames. I am sure he will be significantly bigger a year from now. One of his attributes is his quickness so you don't want to take away from that.
Weis on focusing on just one sport in high school …
What's happened today is high schools have become so specialized that a lot of high school coaches try to get a guy to do just one sport. My thinking is if you want to play three sports then play three sports. By the time you get to college you can specialize on one sport. There are benefits to focusing on one sport year round but I always felt in high school you should live a full experience.
Weis on the progress of Jake Heaps …
Jake Heaps played much better this week. He threw the ball better and had better command. There are only two throws that I wasn't very pleased with but he was much better.
I think Jake has a high ceiling and I don't think we have come close to tapping his ceiling. I think he is going to continue to get better too. I think the quarterback position with both those guys at the end of the year will be much better than what we are right now.
Weis on sticking with Tom Brady in New England when Drew Bledsoe was healthy and ready to play …
When the team goes on a winning streak what are you going to do? Once you got chemistry going it is tough to break up chemistry.
Weis on the future of the quarterbacks …
This is with no one leaving. You have five guys and you have to throw T.J. Millweard into the equation because he is a legitimate player. At the end of the day when you have five of them there is somebody who has a lot of eligibility left will pack it in and go someplace else. You don't encourage them to do so but they see the writing is on the wall and they aren't the guy. You just have to plan on everyone being involved and see how the competition plays out.
