Khalil Herbert was the running back Reggie Mitchell made his main target in January. Mitchell was recruiting different running backs but once it came down to offering scholarships and setting visits Herbert was set for the first weekend the Kansas coaches scheduled official visits.

Herbert gave the coaching staff good news when he was sitting at dinner with the coaches on Saturday night. That’s when he told Kansas head coach David Beaty that’s when he wanted to be a Jayhawk.

“We were at dinner and I told him that I wanted to be a Jayhawk and he gave me a big hug,” Herbert said. “Then he gave the rest of my family hugs. Coach Beaty is an amazing guy. Just me and my family being able to talk to him got a good feel for everything.”

Once Herbert arrived on Friday for his visit he felt Lawrence had a good chance to be his future home. As he learned more about what Kansas has to offer he felt comfortable with the thought about picking the Jayhawks.

“When I first arrived I could tell it felt like a home to me once I stepped on campus,” Herbert said. “Once I thought about the coaching staff, and the education I loved it all.”

Herbert’s family was with him and told him they felt the same he did. He also had a head start learning about the program since he trains with Tony Sands. Sands, one of the best running backs to ever play at Kansas, shared his experience with Herbert.

“He did the same thing that I want to do and that is going in and helping a program turnaround,” Herbert said. “It is a coincidence to be able to go into the same college and do the same thing as he did. I’m ready for it.”

Wide receiver Chase Harrell was Herbert’s host. He got a good feel after hanging around the players for the weekend.

“They all seemed to have each other’s back and looked after one another,” Herbert said. “They all seem like cool, genuine guys.”

With one weekend left for visits Herbert can relax knowing he has his college picked out.

“It was relieving and felt like a weight lifted off my shoulders,” he said. “I feel like I can finally sit back and enjoy this last week until signing day.”
