Jayhawks land record-breaking WR in Stephon Robinson

A year ago Stephon Robinson was piling up big yards for Narbonne High. After 1300 yards receiving and no division one offers he decided to go the junior college route.

His hope was to have a big freshman year and catch the attention of college recruiters.

“I wasn’t expecting to be in a power five conference but I was hoping to get some scholarship offers,” Robinson said about entering his freshman year.

This season at El Camino College he again put up big numbers hauling in 62 passes for 1275 yards. He broke a 12-year old record for receiving yards at the school and was also named the MVP of the Peach Bowl.

It was the big numbers and play-making ability that attracted the attention of college coaches in his first year in the program. One of those coaches was Kansas offensive coordinator Doug Meacham, who convinced him to take an official visit to Lawrence this weekend.

“The KU coaches told me they liked my speed and how I can read the defenses,” Robinson said. “They told me they liked what I do with the ball after I catch it. I had a lot of yards after the catch this year.”

Kansas receiver Quan Hampton was his host on the visit and Robinson liked what he heard from the players and coaches on his trip.

“I felt comfortable around all of the guys and I felt like I already knew them,” he said. “The coaches all cared, and they weren’t pushing me to commit. Everything felt at home. After I saw the facilities and spent time around the coaches I just felt really comfortable.”

At the end of the visit Robinson met with Kansas head coach David Beaty and gave him a verbal commitment.

“After we ate I went in to talk to coach Beaty,” he said. “I told him that I wanted to go to Kansas. He was excited he got up and gave me a hug.

Robinson is a four by three recruit which means he will have three years to play at Kansas and one redshirt season if he needs it. There were other schools recruiting him and he said he is closing his recruitment.

“Before the visit I was planning on taking other ones,” Robinson said. “But I feel good with my decision so I don’t plan on it. I am ready to take this opportunity and run with it.”
