Kansas commit Johnson has big year at LB
Kyron Johnson is turning in a big senior year. The linebacker from Arlington Lamar is in his second year playing the position and he’s been putting up big numbers.
As a sophomore he played safety and then moved to linebacker as a junior.
“When they send me on a blitz they expect me to make a play every time,” Johnson said. “When somebody breaks loose on a tackle they expect me to go get him. They expect me to do a lot and I like that. I like that they depend on me.”
Johnson has 123 tackles and nine sacks this year. This summer he turned in the best 40 time at all of the Jayhawks camps. He was already committed to Kansas before the camp circuit started. But he made a visit to camp to show the coaches what he can do.
“When I first moved it took me awhile to learn the position,” Johnson said. “Thanks to my coach he helped me understand the way linebackers play and I’ve learned a lot to him. My speed helps me a lot because I can get past the big guys because they can’t touch me. I think I am pretty powerful for someone my size.”
Kansas assistant Kenny Perry was the lead recruiter on Johnson. Perry knows the area well and has several connections in Arlington.
“He’s a good dude and funny,” Johnson said of Perry. “He is sarcastic just like me. He has helped me a lot in recruiting.”
Johnson said he plans to take an official to Kansas in December.
