When offensive line coach Zach Yenser offered Derek Kerstetter he knew he was going to make another trip back to Kansas.

Kerstetter, an offensive lineman from Ronald Reagan High in San Antonio, has a good idea about Kansas.

“I am originally from Garden City and I moved to Texas for my dad’s job,” Kerstetter said. “So I know quite a bit about the Kansas basketball and football programs.”

He said his mother grew up in St. Francis and his father in Protection, Kansas. He was born in Garden City before moving to Texas. He plans to take an unofficial visit to Lawrence this summer and will use it to see family members along the way.

“I have an aunt in Kansas City and other one in Derby,” he said. “I’m going to come out this summer. I can visit my grandmother in Coldwater (KS) and then take an unofficial visit.”

Yenser was evaluating Kerstetter and then visited Reagan High to watch him in person. After that the Jayhawks extended him a scholarship offer.

“We have talked a lot,” Kerstetter said of Yenser. “He came down and watched me practice and then they offered. He watched us go through our team drills. He’s an awesome guy and seems really cool. He said he liked how aggressive I am and how I come off the ball hard. He likes the pancake blocks I had. He said I would be a perfect fit for their offensive line.”

Kerstetter has picked up 10 division one offers. A lot of the offers have come in the last couple months.

“I’m looking for a place that I fit best,” he said. “I’m looking at which coaching staffs I get along with the most. I would also like a school where my mom can see me.”
