KU coaches out in full force recruiting during bye-week

The Kansas coaches are packing their bags and ready to hit the road recruiting. They are going out in full force as a staff and will be all over the country in the next three days. All of the full-time assistants and head coach David Beaty are leaving Thursday.

“We’re trying to see 26-30 kids that we either have committed or others that we have offers to and want to go see,” said KU recruiting coordinator Kenny Perry.

The way the schedule lays out the Jayhawks will only have one bye week this season to get out and see recruits. Perry said they want to be sure and use this time efficiently as possible.

“We only get a chance to do it one time,” he said. “We have everybody on the road going to a lot of different places. We’re trying to see as many as we possibly can.”

During the season Beaty puts a priority on recruiting even with practices, game prep, team meetings and everything that goes into game week. But they always find time every day to reach out to recruits.

“We’re talking to kids every day,” Perry said. “We always try to take a day to watch film and do evaluations. We’re always trying to get offers out.”

The bye week does offer more time to focus on recruiting because there are things the coaches don’t have to do during that time. It allows them the ability to spend more time with having to prepare for a game.

“We are getting a chance to talk a lot more about recruiting,” Perry said. “Rather than game planning we are working on a lot more recruiting stuff and evaluating recruits. A bye week gives us a chance to do more of that.”

The current commitment list stands at 10 and that doesn’t count the possibility that some players could count toward the 2018 initial numbers. With some of the early commitments it allows the staff to have a better idea what they need to target.

“We have narrowed down our numbers,” Perry said. “That helps focusing more on what we need. We’re really trying to go back and make sure that everybody we are recruiting are the right ones for us.”
