On Monday mornings all of the Big 12 football coaches participate in the weekly phone call that usually lasts about 10 minutes.

The first question Kansas head coach David Beaty took, went back to the hand shake snub the players had with Baker Mayfield before the coin toss.

Beaty talked about the incident on Saturday after meeting briefly with his team. On Sunday, Beaty had a chance to be around his players during meetings and practice and discuss the situation more thorough.

When asked on the Monday call about the incident here is what he said in his opening comment:

First of all let me address that situation with the coin toss. That was absolutely unacceptable. I’ve had a conversation with Lincoln Riley and I’ve apologized on behalf of our team and I want to apologize to our stakeholders and Jayhawk fans currently, and all the ones that came before us.

It means more to be a Jayhawk. In that situation we needed to make a better decision. I believe strongly in good sportsmanship and that is essential to the game of football and in our mission which is developing young man. You always have to show respect to each other in the teams we are competing against.

While I was unaware that those players weren’t going to shake hands I certainly would have never made that plan as a coaching staff to do something of that nature. I know these kids and I know their hearts. I know their passion and I love their toughness. I love their desire to compete.

But we have let them know that their decision is unacceptable and cannot happen again. Dr. (Sheahon) Zenger and I have had a conversation and we will continue to agree that we want everyone in our program to represent the University of Kansas with dignity and class at all times. Those are character traits of what it means to be a Jayhawk. We talk all the time that our number one job is to create good men. Part of our job is to help these men make decisions in the heat of the moment and unfortunately we didn’t make the right decision on Saturday.

These young men care deeply about representing the University of Kansas, and Kansas football in a classy way. I know that. They’re great young men and I believe in them. I believe in who they are at their core. And it is my job to make sure that they understand what the ripple effects of a decision like that can have. They will learn from this and grow into successful in productive men and great Jayhawks that the Jayhawk family can be proud of. It is unfortunate and I apologize to the Big 12 and college football because it is something that was absolutely unacceptable and we will move forward.

Beaty wasn't aware what was taking place. He said he saw Mayfield step forward to shake hands. The other two Oklahoma players didn't move forward and he said none of the Kansas players did either.

The Jayhawks head coach called it a last-minute mistake by his players and stood up for their character.

"We have discussed it as a team and as a unit that it was misguided," he said. "In this world what you realize real quickly is that people don’t care about intent. It can be perceived in any way and that’s what you have to be very careful of and the ripple effect that that may have.

"Those guys (captains) that went out there, if my daughter marries one like them, I will be pretty happy. They're great men. They made a mistake. They will get better as a result. "

Beaty , who has known Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley for a long time, said the two spoke by phone.

"I talked to him directly about how that is not all indicative of who we are and what we represent.," Beaty said. "I apologized to him , his team, and Baker. We will use this platform to make sure they’re better as a result."
