Ray Vohasek on KU visit, deciding on best time to sign

Still on the Kansas recruiting board are defensive linemen. This weekend the Jayhawks hosted Ray Vohasek, a defensive lineman from College of DuPage.

Vohasek got a lot of attention from different Kansas coaches on the visit. He spent time with defensive coordinator DJ Eliot and defensive line coach Kwahn Drake. He also got to talk to a familiar coach in Mike Ekeler who was hired to coach special teams. North Carolina is one of Vohasek’s offers and that’s where Ekeler came from.

“I had a prior relationship with Coach Ekeler so I talked to him for a while,” Vohasek said. “Coach Elliott recruited a kid from DuPage a long time ago and we talked about that.

“Coach Drake is kind of a high energy guy, but he's a really nice guy. He’s high energy and you can tell he really cares about his players and takes them in the family mentality.”

Vohasek missed time this season with an injury and had labrum surgery to correct it. He also got a medical redshirt that gives him three years of eligibility left.

He talked to the coaches in-depth where he would fit in with their defensive scheme.

“They're not a stagnant 3-4 like some schemes,” he said. “They want to get their d-linemen moving and slanted in different directions to make it hard for the offensive line to block. I think that fits my skill set probably the best. I won't be standing up like an outside-backer but my hands would be in the dirt and I'll be playing inside.”

The search for a home is still ongoing for Vohasek. Coming off the Kansas visit he is still weighing his options and deciding what is best for him. That could include being patient and take his recruiting into January.

“I'm not sure if I’m going to sign in this December period,” he said. “I'm just finishing up with school and I still have another semester left. I got surgery 10 weeks ago so I took a medical redshirt this year. I'm just kind of hanging back right now.”

Vohasek holds an offer from Kansas as well as Oregon State and North Carolina. Although he hasn’t decided what route he will take when it comes to signing, he does know what he’s looking for at his next home.

“I want good academics and a place that I can play,” he said. “Kansas presents both of those. They need d-linemen right now. They were expressing that me a lot. They want some guys that they can bring in and can help right away.”
