Russell visits Kansas after opening his recruiting

Russell liked he saw with the new Business school

Over the summer Javaris Russell committed to Mississippi State. The linebacker from Grenada, MS decided he wanted to look at other options.

Russell visited Kansas for the Jayhawks second home game of the season two days after telling the Mississippi State coaches he was going to open up his recruiting.

“The relationship between the players and the coaches stood out to me,” he said of his Kansas visit. “I thought it was a good family vibe.”

He plans to major in Business and he got a tour of the new facilities around campus along with his mother, Jeanette. Kansas recently unveiled their new Business school that was completed earlier this year.

“They just got a new business building and I saw that because I’m majoring in that area,” Russell said. “That building was awesome it was nice. The campus itself is great. Their weight room and locker room were nice. Words can’t describe how nice the locker room is. Their locker room is top of the line and I think I could live in there for the rest of my life. Everything was good.”

Kansas linebackers coach Todd Bradford is the lead recruiter for Russell. The two have talked on the phone and it was a good chance for Russell to see everything in person and get a different feel for the Kansas program.

“I got a chance to see how they were and I think they’re all good coaches,” Russell said. “They talked to me about what they expect out of their players and how they treat them. Everything was good and we got to know each other a lot better.”

Freshman cornerback Kyle Mayberry was his host on the visit. Russell plans to take other visits to see how school compares to Kansas since he opened up his recruiting.

“My next step is getting a better look at different schools,” he said. “I want to find the best fit for me. Now that I am no longer committed to Mississippi State I can go places without having to worry about all of the media in answering questions.”
