Self announces that Lindsay will transfer

Following one year at Kansas, Merv Lindsay has decided to leave the University of Kansas. Bill Self sent a text message to Jayhawk Slant confirming the news on Monday afternoon.

"Yes, (Merv Lindsay) has decided to transfer and is looking at his options," Bill Self told Jayhawk Slant on Monday afternoon.

Lindsay, the 6-foot-7, 205-pound guard from Moreno Valley, Calif., appeared in just 12 games for the Jayhawks in 2011-12. In all, he averaged 2.2 minutes, 0.9 points and 0.3 rebounds per game.

Lindsay isn't the only player scheduled to leave the Kansas program at the end of the school year. Thomas Robinson recently declared for the NBA draft, while Tyshawn Taylor and Conner Teahan are on track to graduate.

With Perry Ellis, Landen Lucas, Zach Peters, Anrio Adams and Andrew White set to arrive on campus within the next month or so, Self and the Jayhawks are maxed out with regards to scholarships.

Self, late on Monday afternoon, talked about the impact Lindsay had on the KU basketball program this past season.

"Merv and I met last week about his situation and the opportunities he has here," Self said. "He has decided it is in his best interest to look elsewhere to have an opportunity for more playing time. Merv is not a good young man, he is a terrific young man.

"He has done well in school and he has impacted our program on the practice court and in the locker room in a very positive way," he added. "We're going to do everything we can to support and assist him. He's leaving here with a great taste in his mouth as we are with him. At this time he is at square one and we're just looking into it, but he has been granted his release."

In a statement sent out just moments ago by the Sports Information Department, Lindsay indicated he ultimately decided to move on from Kansas to pursue increased playing time elsewhere.

While Lindsay has decided to transfer from Kansas, the year he spent with Self and the Jayhawks won't soon be forgotten.

"With the support of coach Self, me and my family have decided to transfer at the end of the semester to seek more playing time," said Lindsay. "Now I plan to sit down and look at options. I will never forget my freshman year at Kansas, going to the Final Four and winning a conference championship.

"I was fortunate to learn under a great coach in coach Self and his staff," he added. "Being a part of such a great tradition and contributing to that tradition will always mean a lot to me. I love all my teammates, coaches and all the Kansas fans for their support this past year."
