Tago has bowl game on mind, Kansas visit up soon

Jamie Tago has setting up his visit to Kansas on his checklist. But playing for a possible national championship at Garden City Community College will be first up on the schedule.

When the Jayhawks host their first weekend of visits it is likely Tago will be helping Garden City into a bowl game.

“After my season I will set the visit up,” Tago said. “I want to focus on the end of my season and see how that plays out.”

Tago, who is from American Samoa, arrived at Garden City after transferring from the University of Hawaii. Last spring the Kansas coaches watched him in practice and liked what they saw on his practice film.

“When they offered me it was based off of spring ball film,” he said. “They said off of that they liked my athleticism and length. They liked how fast I get off the ball and I work really well into their scheme. I think I can go in there and have an early role and I’m excited about that. I’m glad they gave me the offer and I am grateful for the opportunity.”

This season Tago has put up good numbers from his defensive end position with 56 tackles, 18 tackles for a loss, and nine sacks. Tago credits his head coach Jeff Sims with getting his spring film out to college coaches after he arrived at Garden City. The Jayhawks were one of the first to make contact.

“Garden City has a network and was able to reach out to several programs,” Tago said. “That’s how things got started. Coach Sims kind of paved the way. I am enjoying my time and the opportunity to step on the field and showcase what I can do. I’m trying to bring something different to the table. It has been a successful season so far and I’m just trying to give my hard work to the team.”

The Kansas coaches have been in constant contact with Tago after he committed to the Jayhawks back in the summer.

“I connect with coach (Kenny) Perry a lot,” Tago said. “From time to time coach Slater will message me but the majority of the contact is with coach Perry. They’re going into their second year and they’re trying to bring in more talent. I am grateful for the opportunity. I saw the new locker room online when it was built. I’m just looking forward to getting out there and being part of the process.”
