Turner Gill and his staff will have the opportunity to spend some quality time with two key prospects from the 2011 class this week. Bernard Thomas and Darrian Miller from Blue Springs (MO) High School will travel to Lawrence on Thursday for an unofficial visit.
Thomas, the No. 28 ranked cornerback in the class, is still planning to make his decision at the end of the month, and just told Jayhawk Slant where Kansas currently stands on his list.
"Everything is going good," said Thomas on Wednesday afternoon. "There really isn't anything new, but I am talking to Missouri a little bit more. I'm planning to attend Arkansas's camp, a camp at Tennessee (maybe) and then I'm going to camp at Kansas State on July 31.
"I'm still planning on making my decision towards the end of July," he added. "I went to a camp at Oklahoma and also went to Kansas."
Thomas, the No. 11 ranked player in the state, is no stranger to the recruiting process. Currently, the three-star prospect has scholarship offers from Kansas, Arkansas and Tulsa.
Additionally, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas State, Michigan, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Wisconsin have expressed an interest in the Blue Springs (MO) High School star.
While Thomas indicated he doesn't have an official leader at this time, he made it perfectly clear that Kansas is right at the top of his list.
"Coach Mitchell is the coach from Kansas that I'm in contact with the most," said Thomas. "He's done a great job recruiting me and we've got a great relationship. When Coach Mitchell and I last talked, he told me Coach Gill was going to get more involved with my recruitment. He (Gill) really wants Darrian and I at Kansas, so Coach Mitchell and Coach Gill are going to recruit us together.
"Kansas is at the top, man," he added. "I don't really have a top list, but they are definitely up there. Coach Mitchell has told me if I come to Kansas, I'll have the opportunity to play early. I will also be able to play with some of my high school teammates, which would be cool. Yea, I love Kansas."
Miller, the No. 1 ranked player in the state, committed to Kansas in early March, but ultimately decided to back out of his verbal pledge. Gill and the Jayhawks are still heavily pursing the four-star running back, but is Miller, the No. 77 ranked player in the class, seriously considering the Jayhawks?
"Yea, Darrian and I talk about playing together at Kansas quite a bit," he said. "I just tell Darrian to do what's best for him. I honestly think that Darrian feels the same way about Kansas that I do, but he doesn't put it out there that much.
"I hang out with Darrian enough to know that he likes Kansas a lot," he added. "Actually, he and I will be at Kansas on Thursday for an unofficial visit. We've seen all the new facilities and things like that, and all the new upgrades are awesome. Darrian and I are just going up on Thursday for a visit."
Miller waiting for right time
Miller has been to Lawrence several times and knows a lot about the Kansas program.
This time around he's hoping to get a different look at what the players go through.
"Basically I want to go up, look around and talk to some of the players," Miller said. "I'd like to hang around some of the players and hear what they have to say and see things they do."
On July 17 both players plan to visit Arkansas. Miller, who committed to Kansas earlier, wants to make sure he is making the right decision next time.
"When I commit I want to make sure I'm solid wherever it is," he said. "I could commit somewhere anytime. I really don't have a date set or know when that will be."
Miller said Jordan Nubine could make the trip with them, but doesn't know for sure.
"The trip is getting put together right now," he said. "I don't know all the details."
