Robert Topps said he has his Kansas fleece pullover ready for signing day and that’s what he will wear at his school’s ceremony.

Topps committed to the Jayhawks when he had over 10 scholarship offers, which surprised some people. Some in the recruiting world believed Topps would receive several more when he picked Kansas.

After he committed those bigger schools started to come in but Topps always stayed solid with Kansas.

“I stayed committed because I believe in what coach Beaty is doing,” Topps said. “They were the first Power Five program to take a chance on me. Other Power Five schools tried to come in later but I did not buy what they were saying. So I stayed true to KU.”

Topps has what the college recruiters look for in a defensive back. He’s 6-foot-2, 190 pounds and showed the ability to be a big cornerback.

He took his official visit two weeks ago and that even solidified to him that he made the right choice.

“It was fun,” Topps said. “I got to see campus in-depth and get the whole atmosphere. I got to meet with players on the team. The players that I talked to treated me like family. Everyone was nice and welcoming. The biggest part was you can tell everybody is buying in. They see the program going in the right direction.”

Topps mentioned his host Kyle Mayberry did a good job telling him how the program works as a player.

Kansas defensive coordinator Clint Bowen made several trip to Chicago to see the all-area cornerback.

“I got to know Coach Bowen really well,” Topps said. “He has been out to visit me. I also got to know Coach Perry and the whole staff really, which is a big reason I’m not going anywhere.”

When Topps took his official visit his mother and father went with him. They were on the Jayhawks side every bit as strong as Topps is.

“They loved it,” Topps said. “They support the decision going to KU 100%.”
