Don't ask about Sharp
Mangino on Tuesday was asked about the injury status for running back Jake Sharp. Against Duke last Saturday, Sharp saw limited playing time because of an injury he suffered earlier in the week in practice. Toben Opurum took most of the snaps on Saturday.
"We are not going to talk about that all week," Mangino said about Sharp's injury. "I have made it clear it will be a game time decision and that is all the further I am going to go with that."
Wildcat back in style
This week, Kansas will spend part of its practice time preparing for the wildcat formation. Southern Miss has used the formation several times this season.
"We have played against it before and it is not foreign to our players," Mangino said. "We have to put a sound plan together because if you are not assignment sound you are going to get in trouble."
Drops a problem
Kansas wide receivers Dezmon Briscoe and Jon Wilson both dropped key passes against Duke. Kerry Meier said the receivers as a whole didn't have a good week of practice leading up to the game.
"I definitely think that translates over onto Saturdays," Meier said. "I am going to be harping on guys to practice with the habits that you play with on Saturday."
Scout's Honor
As Kansas prepared for Duke, quarterback Christian Matthews played the role of Duke quarterback Thaddeus Lewis for the scout team. He did a good enough job that he was named offensive scout team player of the week. Safety Justin Thornton, who had to go up against Matthews last week, said the offensive scout team has a different attitude this season.
"One thing that is different this year than in the past is our scout team offense really likes to compete against us," Thornton said. "They aren't just going through the motions and we got some good wide receivers and a good quarterback and running back that is going to help us in the long run."
