Tyriek Starks admits on signing day morning he isn’t sure if he will be wearing any Kansas Jayhawk gear.

“All I have is a Jayhawk jacket and I don’t know what the weather is supposed to be like,” Starks said. “It was 80 degrees yesterday.”

Okay, so maybe Starks won’t be able to wear any Kansas gear. All that matters is the Kansas coaches receive his letter of intent in the morning.

Starks said he will take part in the New Orleans signing ceremony which is covered live on television.

Not a day goes by he doesn’t talk to Kansas head coach David Beaty or new wide receivers coach Jason Phillips.

“I talk to coach Phillips and he said they are really excited about me signing,” Starks said. “He said they are looking forward to the future. Him and coach Beaty check in with me all the time.”

In the last three days Starks said he has received phone calls from coaches at Arizona, Indiana, Tulane, Georgia Southern, and New Mexico State. They say recruiting never stops and that has been the case with Starks.

The Jayhawks got involved with Starks two weeks ago when Beaty stopped by Warren Easton High. He was checking on players that his friend and head coach Tony Hull might have. That’s when he took a long look at Starks film and did homework on the quarterback. 48 hours later Starks had a scholarship offer and was taking an official visit to Kansas.

“The recruiting was still heavy on me through the weekend but I am sticking with Kansas,” he said. “I got a lot of calls. The coaches that were calling me were from Arizona, Indiana, New Mexico State, Georgia Southern, and Tulane. At times I had to put my phone on vibrate because I never knew who was calling.”

This season Hull said Starks threw for over 4400 yards and 40 touchdowns and added close to another 500 yards in rushing. Beaty wasn’t looking to use an initial scholarship for the 2016 class on a quarterback but that changed after seeing Starks.

Starks said other college coaches tried to use the lack of recent success against Kansas. But that didn’t work because he has watched Warren Easton turn into a very good program under Hull.

“Some of the coaches were trying to tell me that Kansas isn’t a winning program,” Starks said. “But I told them here at my high school we were in the same position and we had to build a foundation. And I am excited about Kansas.”

Tomorrow will hopefully end a hectic end of the recruiting season for Starks. He even said his mother is ready for it all to be over.

“I’m just excited about moving on from high school to the next level,” he said.
