David McComb took his first visit to Kansas at the end of June when the coaching staff had several 2025 prospects on campus for their junior day event.
He made the trip with his father and after it was over, he was ready to be a Jayhawk. But Kansas quarterbacks coach Jim Zebrowski wanted him to slow down and make the right decision.
“I told Coach Z I wanted to commit a couple days after the barbecue,” McComb said. “Then he took me down, because I was on the visit high, and then he's like, ‘Okay, let's get your mom down here, make sure she loves it.’”
His unofficial visit to campus today was with his mother so she could talk to the coaches and see the program firsthand.
“Her thing was, she was a little scared that I was just making this decision too quick,” he said. “I feel like she saw today what I saw the first time. The second time I've been back there is today, and it just reassured me that this is where I want to be, this is where I want to play, and she saw it too. The coaching staff how connected they are to the players, how much they care about the players, showed a lot today. I think my mom really saw that, and she enjoyed it.”
During the last visit McComb spent most of his time around Zebrowski. This trip he got a chance to visit with Lance Leipold and Andy Kotelnicki.
“I just got to talk to Coach K and that’s what was cool to me,” McComb said. “I can just tell he's a smart guy and wants to develop players for the NFL, and I feel like they can do that with me. I talked to Coach Leipold for 30 minutes, and we were just talking about it. He's like, ‘If you're in, I'm in. I'm going to support you all the way. We got your back. We're in this together.’”
McComb said he did not notice a lot of new things during his return visit. He was impressed after his initial trip in June and was sold on the program.
“I saw everything I saw last time,” he said. “Everything was just fantastic. Everything's great as it was last time, and it just gets better. I'm just so excited to build a relationship with these coaches coming up. It's super exciting for me. I can't believe it's all happening right now.”
During his visit he told the coaching staff he wanted to commit, becoming the first commitment in the 2025 class.
“It feels really nice because I just want to build this relationship with these coaches now,” he said. “I don't want to have to worry about camps, worry about visits, and having to throw in front of coaches. I'm all in for Kansas. Now I can focus on my team. I can focus on high school, and just winning the most games we can for those guys so they can be able to go to college too and be able to have this opportunity in the future.”
McComb had offers after his sophomore season from Kansas, Virginia Tech, North Texas, Tulsa, Toledo and other programs. He played in eight last year as a sophomore at Edmond Memorial throwing for 1488 yards and rushing for 310.
