Notebook: Coaches recruiting on bye week

The Jayhawks got practices in Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday before the staff went on the road to recruit for the weekend.
The plan was to visit as many of the committed players they could during the bye week recruiting coordinator Reggie Mitchell told Jayhawk Slant.

Interim head coach Clint Bowen was also on the road Friday stopping by a few high schools in the Kansas City area. He made stops at Shawnee Mission West, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Rockhurst.
Aquinas was the school he visited at 8 a.m. to meet with Randy Dreiling.
"I appreciated him coming in and it was good to see him," Dreiling said. "From what I have seen the kids have played hard for him. He's a good guy and a KU guy."
After that Bowen was at West to visit with Tim Callaghan, the head coach. Bowen used to recruit West when that school was in his territory and has known Callaghan for a long time.
"It brings back memories when he used to always come in," Callaghan said. "I know he will roll his sleeves and get to work for KU."
Assistants on the recruiting trail
During the ESPN telecast of the Cedar Hill-DeSoto game Kansas assistant Scott Vestal could be seen watching. He was standing next to former Kansas assistant David Beaty, who is now at Texas A&M. Kansas commit Kevin Thomas was mentioned several times during the game.
Vestal also attended games Frisco Wakeland vs. Frisco Heritage and Coppell vs. Euless Trinity.
Recruiting coordinator Reggie Mitchell took in a game featuring 2016 running back commitment Aubrey White. Dave Campo watched Aaron Garza and Buddy Wyatt scouted Carl Thompson.
Offensive lineman DeLonte' Murray confirmed John Reagan watched his game.
Louie Matsakis who was promoted to the staff a few weeks ago was recruiting in the Houston area.
Big week landing Josh Moore
The Jayhawks got an unexpected commitment from Josh Moore. Olathe North head coach Gene Wier called the parting between Moore and Ohio State a mutual decision. Moore committed to Bowen on Thursday morning.
Wier, who guided Olathe North to six state titles, believes more high school recruits in the area will give the Jayhawks a look.
"I think someone like Clint Bowen will make recruits reconsider (their early commitments)," Wier said. "There are two highly respected recruiters in Kansas City and that's Andy Hill and Bowen. It comes down to trusting people. It was the same way when I was coaching in Texas. People down there trusted Bowen."
Wier coached in Texas after leaving Olathe North for nine years. He returned to Olathe North two years ago.
Back to normal work week
The players and coaches will report back today to start the normal week. Practice is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. and players will lift before. The players had Friday and Saturday off during the bye week.
