July is usually a slow month since it is a dead period, but the recruiting calendar opens up this week for recruits to take unofficial visits.

The Kansas coaching staff is expected to host two visitors today. David McComb and Garret Rutledge told Jayhawk Slant they will be in Lawrence again.

McComb, a 2025 quarterback from Edmond Memorial (Okla.), took his first visit to campus at the end of June when the staff hosted several top prospects for a junior day barbeque.

“My first time up was the barbecue and I really enjoyed that,” McComb said. “There were probably like 15 visitors, but I was the only quarterback. I got to talk to Coach Zebrowski and just spent a lot of time with him. It’s really exciting because he's super excited about me, which is cool. And I'm super excited about him because I love that he's just a good quarterback coach and he can develop me. That was the main part that I really enjoyed, just spending time with him.”

Since the visit in June, McComb said he and Zebrowski have stayed in constant communication. He likes how Zebrowski talks about coaching the quarterbacks.

“He's just so excited about the game,” he said. “You understand what he's saying and understand how to learn from him. He's not like one of those guys that tell you like, ‘Hey, you're the best quarterback ever.’ He's going to tell you what you need to work on. And I really like that because it's really helpful for me. It just seems like every time I talk to him, he's super nice and welcoming, and it's really cool.”

Last season as a sophomore in eight games he threw for 1488 yards and 11 touchdowns. He added another 310 yards on the ground.

Zebrowski watched him at practice and offered him shortly after.

“His favorite two words are just be loose and sudden,” McComb said. “He said he likes the plays I can make spontaneously on the run and stuff. And he thinks that my ceiling is a lot higher than what I think it is. He feels like he can develop me a lot, which is really cool.

“He came to see me throw at practice and then a week later he texted my head coach. I had to call him, and they offered me. He really liked the way I handled myself at practice.”

He wants his mother to see Kansas since she did not make the trip in June.

“I'm taking my mom back up there because I would just like her to see it because I really enjoyed it last time,” he said. “I just wanted her to see the campus and stuff. I’d like to talk to Coach K a little more. I didn't really get to see him too much last time. I just want to see how he incorporates the quarterbacks in the offense. I know Jalon and Jason are really good quarterbacks, and they did really well last year.”

McComb has been hearing from several coaches. He has offers from Virginia Tech, Memphis, Tulsa, Toledo, and North Texas.

Rutledge had a good showing at KU's summer camp

Rutledge attended the KU camp on June 21 and impressed offensive line coach Scott Fuchs.

Fuchs has been recruiting Rutledge for several months. As a junior Rutledge suffered an injury that set him back for most of the season.

“In week five of my junior season, I had a stress fracture in my back,” he said. “My doctor prescribed three months of complete rest. And then after that, it was a lot of physical therapy and working back into activity very slowly.”

He believes he is back to 100 percent and ready for his senior year. Fuchs wanted to evaluate him at camp where he got a closer look at his ability.

“He (Fuchs) had been talking with my coach about what he wanted to see from me,” Rutledge said. “He wanted to see some more explosiveness out of me. And then after the camp, we had some phone calls and he told me that he thought he saw that at camp, so that was some good news. And then he told me on our second phone call that they wanted to get me up for a visit, so that was awesome.”

Going through camp gave Rutledge a close-up view of what it is like to work with Fuchs on the offensive line.

“I really like how he coaches and is a really respectable guy,” he said. “I really enjoyed it.”

Rutledge has been to Kansas several times. He took an unofficial visit for the Texas game last year and later attended a junior day event. He is looking forward to seeing the coaching staff again.

“I'm just looking forward to meeting with the coaches again,” he said. “Coach Fuchs said it'd be a little more in depth than past visits, so I think that'll be good for me to learn more about the program. I'm looking forward to it.”

He said he has been hearing from Kansas State, Iowa State and several FCS programs.
