One of the pre-signing day surprises for the Jayhawks came on Tuesday when defensive end Azur Kamara announced he was headed to Kansas.

Kamara, a 6-foot-6, 230 pound defensive end from Arizona Western is expected to sign with Kansas in Wednesday.

“I felt like my skill fits Kansas the best,” Kamara said. “It’s a place that I can go to and make an immediate impact.”

This season Kamara was bad news on opposing offenses. He recorded 12.5 sacks and had another 15 tackles for a loss. His 12.5 sacks tied for fifth in the country.

The Kansas coaches have recruited Arizona Western with a lot of effort and are also targeting other players at the school. Kamara visited Lawrence on Dec. 8 and had a chance to learn more about the program and spend time with his lead recruiter Todd Bradford.

“Coach Bradford was my recruiting coach and he did a pretty good job,” Kamara said. “He was honest about everything and showed a lot of interest in me.”

Kamara had a long list offers that included Florida State, Nebraska, Oregon, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, and many others. He took official visits to Iowa State, Kansas, and Oregon State. It has been a long process for the highly-recruited Kamara and he’s feeling good to make a decision.

“It feels great to be honest I feel relieved,” he said.
