KU lands Five-Star Quentin Grimes on final day of early signing period

It’s safe to say that Kansas went out with a bang with the weeklong early signing period nearing its end. With five-star point guard Devon Dotson, five-star power forward Silvio De Sousa and five-star center David McCormack already on board in 2018, Bill Self and his staff just added a major piece to its recruiting class.

On Wednesday night, Quentin Grimes, the 6-foot-5, 180-pound guard from College Park High School in The Woodlands, Texas, committed to Kansas during a press conference inside the Woodlands High School Gymnasium.

With family members, friends, teachers and administrators in attendance, Grimes, the No. 11 ranked player in the 2018 class, committed to Kansas over serious interest from Texas, Kentucky and Marquette.

Grimes, a five-star prospect and one of the nations top guard prospects in the 2018 class, is now a member of one of the nation’s top recruiting classes.

“I know that Devon is a really good guard and great driver,” said Grimes. “I’m more of a jump shooter and a scorer so we will complement each other really well.

“David is a monster in the post, he just gets a lot of stuff done,” he added. “Silvio is a freak athlete, I mean he dunks everything. I’m really looking forward to it and think we have the No. 1 class.”

Grimes, whose mother attended the University of Kansas, made several trips to Lawrence throughout his recruitment. In recent weeks, head coach Bill Self, along with Coach Jerrance Howard, traveled to Texas to check in on one of their top remaining prospects, if not their top remaining prospect, in the 2018 class.

Having identified Grimes as a top priority long ago, the work put in by Self, Howard and the entire coaching staff, paid off on Wednesday night.

Not long after Grimes went public with his decision, JayhawkSlant.com reached out to Rivals.com National Basketball Recruiting Analyst Eric Bossi to get his thoughts on KU’s most recent addition to the 2018 recruiting class.

“What I like about Grimes is that he is a pure scorer who can get offense at all three levels,” said Bossi. “He's big and strong enough to score in the post and finish through contact, he has an outstanding mid-range game and he's a dangerous shooter from deep. He's confident and never wavers in his approach and is able to get his shots without being selfish."

"The Kansas backcourt is going to be really interesting next year,” he added. “Obviously you have Grimes and Dotson coming in as highly regarded recruits, Charlie Moore is coming off of sitting his transfer year. Marcus Garrett will be back, Sam Cunliffe is there and then you have to see what happens with Malik Newman and LaGerald Vick when it comes to the NBA. It's going to be a loaded group that will allow Self to play many different styles on both ends of the floor."
