Ky Thomas has a huge first game, gives thoughts on KU visit

Ky Thomas is becoming more familiar with the Kansas campus. For the second time in three months Thomas and his father visited Lawrence, this time for the Jayhawks season opener.

Thomas, a running back from Topeka High, was on hand to watch Kansas start 1-0 and honor the Orange Bowl team. He said the people at the game caught his attention.

“The fans at the game and how supportive they were stood out to me the most at the game,” Thomas said. “Also just the hype of the game how exciting it would be to be playing with that type of environment and crowd behind you.”

Thomas also visited Kansas in the summer with offensive lineman Jacob Isaia. Over the summer on his visit he also had a chance to spend time around the coaches and visit with Kansas head coach David Beaty.

“Coach Beaty seems like a pretty chill and laid back person,” Thomas said. “It’s always nice talking to him. It's something I enjoy doing when visiting.”

Thomas’ father Tobian played for the Topeka Knights arena team back when Clint Bowen was the head coach. So the family has a familiarity of the Jayhawks program.

Last week Thomas had a grand opening to his sophomore season rushing for 255 yards and six touchdowns against Topeka Hayden. It was one of the top performances in the state for week one. Thomas wanted to make sure and give a call out to the offensive linemen blocking for him.

“I have to give a lot of credit to our whole offensive line,” he said. “Everyone blocked and everyone was on the same page. We just clicked which is hard to do in the first game of the season. We took a lot of positives out of that game and looking to build off of it in week two. It felt pretty good to start the season off on a good note, not just me, but the whole team with a win.”

Thomas, only a sophomore, got first scholarship offer from the Jayhawks.
