In May Kansas defensive coordinator Clint Bowen was at Marist High in Chicago to evaluate several players. The Jayhawks offered three players from Marist and one of the them was cornerback Robert Topps.

Since that time Bowen has been building a relationship with Topps as Kansas has moved up his list.

“I have been talking to coach Bowen and coach (David) Beaty for the last month,” Topps said. “I’m hoping to visit there soon. I’m impressed with their program and they are at the top of my list.”

Topps, a 6-foot-2, 185 pound corner has garnered a lot of interest from college coaches. Talking to Bowen one of the things that has stood out is the recent tradition the Jayhawks have with defensive backs in the NFL.

“He talked to me about all of the players they have in the league who were defensive backs,” Topps said. “He has coached some good players. We also talked about defenses and coverages they run.”

Topps said Bowen liked his length and the way he can play press coverage. He hopes to visit Kansas in July and if that doesn’t happen he will take an official visit to Lawrence.

“I want to find a school that I can see myself fitting in and also looking at the education I can get during my time as a player,” Topps said. “I have talked with a lot of coaches. I like Miami (Ohio). I’ve also heard from a lot of coaches in the Big 10. Right now I’m big on Kansas.”

If it works out Topps said he would like to make a decision before my senior year.
